Subjects is a large scale multimedia installation exploring statistics and their relation to the body.  A collection of 1000 handmade human forms are repeatedly labelled, statisticized, categorized, or in other ways made a subject until they are consumed. The 1000 forms are a reflection of the impact access to unending ‘free’ information has on people; often, convoluted and contradictory statistics from blogs, anecdotes, and various levels of research.  This information/misinformation can influence and warp perception, identity, personality, gender, and our everyday lives.

The Oxford dictionary defines a subject as ‘a person that is being discussed, described, or dealt with; a member of a state other than its ruler; a person who is the focus of scientific or medical attention or experiment.’ Each definition presents itself in the creation process as hundreds of statistics were compiled and applied to the subjects by their undergoing pre-determined processes such as stitching, slashing, paint submersion and object affixation. Statistics considered, are  general (i.e. gender, age, weight), health related  (i.e. chronic illness, projected diagnoses, abilities/disabilities) and some purely arbitrary, compiled from media sources.

This project was made possible with support from the Canada Council for the Arts Explore and Create Professional Development Grant, and with support from my peers and mentor Yvette Cenerini during my time in the MAWA Foundation Mentorship Program.
